Interview with Dr.-Ing. Bayram Aslan of ITA Istanbul

Bayram Aslan is responsible for the coordination and strategic management of all activities of the Institut für Textiltechnik der RWTH Aachen University (ITA) and ITA Technologietransfer GmbH, Aachen, in the region Turkey / MENA. Mr. Aslan is also a member of the Board of Institute Management and is the Managing Director of İTA İstanbul Tekstil Araştırma Geliştirme ve Eğitim A.Ş. (ITA Istanbul). ITA Istanbul is a joint innovation initiative of the Turkish textile exporter associations and the ITA.
At the upcoming Turkish-German Innovation Summit in Istanbul, the Global Success Club is proud to welcome Bayram Aslan, as a participator of the summit. To give all Summit participants a little taste of what is to come at the event, he was kind enough to answer a few questions about his work at ITA Istanbul. Please enjoy the interview and be sure to find out more at the Summit on the 15th-16th of March.

GSC: On the ITA´s (Institut für Textiltechnik der RWTH Aachen University) website, there is an article that says the Institute was recently featured in the VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbauer, German Engineering Federation). Featured there was some research that the institute had done on Industrie 4.0. Could you please outline some of the projects that the institute has undertaken in attempting to bring the Textile industry into the new age of industry?

Mr. Aslan: With the implementation of Industrie 4.0, ITA conducts research in numerous public projects and direct research and development contracts. Particular focuses are: cognitive and self-optimizing textile machinery, human-machine-interface, the cross-linked textile process chain and the textile factory operation.

The most important projects at ITA concerning Industrie 4.0 are:

  • • Excellence cluster – Integrated production technology for high-wage countries
  • • SmartFactory: Determination of the specific requirements of Industrie 4.0 in the textile industry
  • • SpeedFactory: Automated piece production of sporting goods and car seats
  • • StoreFactory: Real-time implementation of customized, knitted products based on customer-specific design features and physiological requirements (3D scanning)
  • • SozioTex: Analysis and targeted design of socio-technical systems for an aging workforce, especially when dealing with innovative and cross-linked production steps
  • • AugmenTex: Realistic and time independent learning of the functionality of textile machinery using Augmented Reality

GSC: The ITA has very close ties with Turkey, and you yourself are a member of the Board of Institute Management and Managing Director of ITA Istanbul. Could you please tell us, in your opinion, how important the collaborative ties between Germany and Turkey are when innovating?

Mr. Aslan: "ITA Istanbul (Tekstil Araştırma Geliştirme ve Eğitim Anonim Şirketi) is a research and development institute in cooperation with Turkish textile exporter associations from the regions of Istanbul, Gaziantep, Adana, Izmir and Bursa. The Board is mainly staffed by the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University. ITA Istanbul has a partner university, Marmara University, and is located 20 minutes from Istanbul Ataturk Airport.

The location in Istanbul is used to acquire new partners and to coordinate direct collaboration with industry in Turkey within joint research and development projects. Furthermore, German and Turkish companies are accompanied during the development of current markets. The transnational cooperation is particularly strengthened and is going to be extended by intensive partnerships with industrial associations, universities and research institutes in Turkey. ITA Istanbul builds a "Technology Gateway" between Germany and Turkey. Thereby the most important collaborative tie between Germany and Turkey is innovation in order to combine the strengths of both partners: On the one hand the pragmatism, flexibility and speed of Turkey with the discipline and systematic/methodical approach of Germany. Based on this on the other hand, when it comes to industrialization of Innovation, Turkey and Germany build a strong collaborative tie. Therefore the main aim within the collaboration of " ITA Istanbul" is the bringing-to-market of Innovation.

GSC: Being a classically trained Mechanical Engineer who studied at the Aachen University and now continues to work and lecture there, could you please tell us some efforts the University is taking in educating its students about Industrie 4.0, and how it is preparing them for a future career in manufacturing when everything is becoming digital?

Mr. Aslan: The Foundations of Industrie 4.0 are integrated in general in a number of lectures, e.g. in control engineering, computer science and production technology. Furthermore, the first research projects addressing Industry 4.0 were recently completed. Now the results are examined and it will be decided which content can be integrated into lectures. It is a process.

Some of the offered programs for students as well as experts are as follows:

  • • Summer School-Production Technology meets Industry 4.0: In this Summer School, students receive an introduction to new production technologies in connection with Industry 4.0.
  • • Professional Education Certificate Courses:
    • • Short Intensive Course, Advanced Course and Expert Training in Cyber-Physical Systems and Intelligent Robotics
  • • Individual Pick & Mix Courses on Cyber-Physical Systems and Intelligent Robotics:
    • • Communication in Modern Production Systems
    • • Integrating, Mining and Analyzing Data for Production Systems
    • • Handling Complexity in Industry 4.0 – Decision making using Expert-Systems and Machine Learning
    • • Robot Operating System (ROS) for industrial Robots
    • • In-factory Logistics Using Mobile Robots
    • • Fundamentals of Smart Engineering for Smart Factory

GSC: Mr. Aslan, thank you very much for your time!
