Tactile Internet

 

Behind this term stands the wireless communication infrastructure, which characterizes such trends as, among others, Industry 4.0, networked mobility and smart grid. Tactile Internet makes it possible to control people and objects such as robots, machines and cars in real time. It is the idea of a real-time Internet, the expansion of the mobile Internet and the Internet of Things, and is thought to be possible by 2020. Germany can help shape the role of ICT and microelectronics in the development of tactile internet. In the new position paper "Tactile Internet" by experts from the Information Technology Association from the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technology - VDE (VDE | ITG), important assessments of this are summarized together.

Real-time Internet requires significantly lower response times. The Tactile Internet, which the VDE | ITG experts expect by 2020, thus requires networks which then allow for reaction times in the range of a millisecond. However, we are still far away from this goal. Currently the common national response time in Western Europe in the fixed network is 10ms to 60ms; in the LTE mobile network it is 25ms to 40ms. A so-called mini-cloud should aid in the reduction of the reaction time. This provides all the functionality of a cluster, which can, for example, control the robotics of an industrial complex. For a practical implementation, entirely new chip technologies and network architectures are required. Also necessary are auto-ID technologies and "Embedded Security" for more "Datability."

The VDE position paper (March 2014) shows how the real-time mobile Internet will play a role in determining our lives significantly from 2020, and it also discusses the need for German research to develop, produce and use innovative internet technologies and applications in Germany, as well as the need for this research to help shape global standards.
